The HT802 solves a specific, common problem: a site with existing analog phones (or a fax machine) that's moving to VoIP but doesn't want to throw out working hardware. Two RJ11 FXS ports let two analog phones register as two independent SIP extensions through a single device, so the phones on the desks don't know or care that the line behind them changed from a copper pair to an Ethernet cable.
T.38 fax support and GR-909 line testing specifically target the fax-machine case, which is where a lot of cheaper ATAs fall over — fax over a poorly-configured VoIP line is notoriously unreliable, and T.38 is what actually makes it work. Call quality on the voice side is handled by G.722, iLBC, and Opus codec support, dynamic jitter buffering, and echo cancellation, so voice quality doesn't visibly suffer for being on an analog phone rather than a native SIP handset.
The v2 hardware (faster processor, double the RAM, 8x the flash of the original HT802) makes it noticeably more responsive to provision and reboot than earlier units, and it still supports the same TR-069 and encrypted XML auto-provisioning as the rest of the Grandstream range — useful when a site has a handful of these scattered around and needs to manage them centrally rather than logging into each one by hand. Compact enough (under 4 inches square) to sit behind a phone or tuck into a cable run without becoming its own piece of desk clutter.
