The Dream Machine SE is Ubiquiti's answer to "how many boxes does this network actually need" — a security gateway, an 8-port Gigabit PoE+ switch (six 15W ports plus two 30W ports, 180W total budget), and a network video recorder with 128GB of onboard SSD storage, all running UniFi OS on one 1U unit. A 1.7GHz quad-core ARM processor and 4GB of RAM handle routing, IDS/IPS, and camera recording simultaneously without the console choking the way a consumer router does under the same load.
Dual WAN options — a 10G SFP+ port and a 2.5GbE RJ45 — mean it's ready for a fibre upgrade before most offices actually order one, and the built-in switch means APs, cameras, and phones plug straight into the SE itself instead of needing a separate switch underneath it. The 128GB internal SSD holds weeks of recorded footage before it needs a bigger drive; drop in a 3.5" HDD in the internal bay for long-term retention without an external NVR.
